Portugal IRS: your annual tax return, done the right way
IRS is Portuguese personal income tax. There's a return every year, and if you're self-employed you also deal with recibos verdes. We explain, file and follow up.
The tax is yours. The doubts don't have to be.
You're filing for the first time
Your first year in Portugal and no idea what goes on the return. We look at your income and do it with you.
You work on recibos verdes
You're self-employed and issue receipts on the Finanças Portal. You need the right activity registered and to declare everything the following year.
You still have income abroad
Rent, a salary or investments in another country. If you're tax resident in Portugal, that also needs attention on your IRS.
Families and couples
Children, health and education expenses, a joint or separate return. Small choices change the result.
Filing is an obligation. Filing correctly is what we do.
Annual IRS return
We gather your income and expenses, check the pre-filled return Finanças provides and submit it on time.
Registering self-employed activity
We register your activity with Finanças under the right code for what you do, so you can start issuing recibos verdes.
Changing or closing your activity
Changed services, started invoicing more or stopping? We change or close your activity, leaving nothing pending.
Issuing recibos verdes
If you only issue a few, we issue the recibo verde for you and show you how to do it yourself next time.
Invoices and expenses
We help you check the invoices registered under your NIF, which become IRS deductions when they're correctly classified.
Certificates and payment plans
We issue debt and no-debt certificates and, if the tax bill is high, apply to pay it in instalments.
How your IRS return works
- 01
A conversation about your year
You tell us where you worked, how much you earned, here and abroad, and who lives with you. We identify what goes on the return.
- 02
Checking the data
We look at the pre-filled return from Finanças and correct anything missing or wrong.
- 03
Simulation and choice
We simulate the possible options, such as filing jointly or separately, and explain the result before submitting.
- 04
Submission and follow-up
We submit the return and follow it until the assessment, whether it's a refund or tax to pay.
IRS is always due in spring
The IRS return is submitted on the Finanças Portal between 1 April and 30 June, on the previous year's income. In 2027, you declare what you earned in 2026. Organising your expenses before April makes everything simpler.
What people ask before they start.
When is the IRS return due in Portugal?
The return is submitted from 1 April to 30 June, always on the previous year's income. It's filed online, on the Finanças Portal. If the last day falls on a public holiday, the deadline moves to the next working day.
Who has to file an IRS return in Portugal?
As a rule, anyone who had income in Portugal in the previous year, with some exceptions for low income of a single type. If you worked on recibos verdes, you almost always file. We confirm whether you have to, or whether it's worth filing anyway to get a refund.
Do I have to declare income from abroad on my IRS?
If you're tax resident in Portugal, you generally declare your worldwide income, including income from other countries. Portugal has double taxation treaties with many countries to prevent the same income being taxed twice. We review each source of income and apply the right rule.
Am I tax resident in Portugal in the year I moved?
It depends on when you arrived and where your home was. In the year you move, the law allows you to be resident for only part of the year. This changes your IRS a lot, so we go through the dates with you before filing.
What is IRS Automático and should I accept it?
It's a return Finanças prepares on its own for simple cases. It's practical, but it only considers what the system already knows. Before accepting, check that no expenses, dependants or income are missing.
How do I register as self-employed to issue recibos verdes?
You register your activity with Finanças, with your profession's code and an estimate of what you'll invoice. That estimate defines, for example, whether you charge VAT (IVA). We register the activity and explain what changes with Social Security.
I've stopped being self-employed. Do I need to close my activity?
Yes. While the activity is open, the obligations continue. Closing it is reported to Finanças and is also reflected at Social Security. We close it and check whether any return is still pending.
Can a couple file IRS jointly in Portugal?
Yes. Married couples and those in a de facto union choose between a joint or separate return. Joint isn't always better, so we simulate both before filing.
I filed my IRS with a mistake. Can I fix it?
Yes, with a replacement return. The sooner the mistake is corrected, the simpler it is. We review the return, correct it and follow the new assessment.
My IRS bill is high. Can I pay in instalments?
In many cases, yes, with an instalment plan requested from Finanças. We check whether you're eligible and apply, so you stay up to date without squeezing your month.
We're with you the whole way.
